Christian Del Re, Brooklyn Assistant Principal, Exchanged 2,919 Text Messages With High School Student

A Brooklyn assistant principal is under fire for allegedly exchanging a staggering 2,919 text messages with a high school student in just 91 days.

The Daily News reports Christian Del Re of the Leon M. Goldstein High School for the Sciences also had late-night conversations with the 18-year-old female student, including one phone call that lasted nearly three hours.

In January, investigators were alerted after a student informed a school staff member the student and Del Re were becoming unusually close. Other students even claimed they had seen the him playing with her hair and leaving school premises together.

Del Re was removed from the school and the Department of Education is now hoping to fire him altogether. Del Re, despite currently having no direct contact with students, is still raking in a $101,056 annual salary.

The disgraced educator is married and denies the charges.

News of Del Rey's alleged misconduct follows a disturbing report from April revealing 16 teachers accused of sexual misconduct are still teaching in the city's school system.

At the time, Chancellor Dennis Walcott said, "If I had my way, these teachers would no longer be in the classroom," adding "common-sense reforms" would provide him the authority to move forward with the firings.

The system's protocol guarantees staffers accused of sexual misconduct a right to a hearing process with independent arbitrators who have the power to hire or keep the accused employee.

Mayor Bloomberg issued a sharp criticism of those current procedures protecting accused teachers and said they were both "dangerous" and "indefensible."
