Cory Booker's Gun Control Initiative Turns Weapons Into Bracelets

Cory Booker Wants To Put Guns In Your Jewelry Box

Newark, N.J., Mayor Cory Booker announced Thursday a new twist to his gun buyback initiative: melting down weapons and turning them into jewelry bearing an engraving of the gun's serial number.

Booker introduced the jewelry line, called "The Caliber Collection," during an appearance on MSNBC's "The Rachel Maddow Show." The mayor said he intends to use the jewelry line as an "instrument for more buybacks, an instrument of peace."

The Newark Star-Ledger reports Newark has raised $20,000 for buyback programs by melting down weapons reclaimed by police and sending them to Jewelry For A Cause, a company that repurposes the materials from liquidated weapons.

Gun buyback programs received attention in the wake of President Barack Obama's extensive gun control proposal, which marks one of the most significant responses to gun violence in a generation.
