Crafting And Money: Can You Make A Career Out Of DIY? (VIDEO)

WATCH: Can You Make A Living By Crafting?

Between sites like Etsy, the rise of craft blogs and TLC's new show "Craft Wars," it truly seems as if crafting for money is a viable career path. But is it really?

In a clip from Wednesday's "Good Morning America" show, the hosts discussed just how booming the crafting business has become and how selling your handiwork is ultimately recession-proof. Erica Domesek, "Craft Wars" judge and the genius behind crafting blog P.S. I Made This..., joined the show to highlight talented individuals who have sold their creations for big bucks. One crafter Erica mentioned took a $50 dresser, added some PVC piping and sold the piece for $2,500.

But is making money from crafts as easy as whipping something together and putting it on a website? We think not.

For one, crafting is an extremely time consuming and difficult thing to do, especially if you're trying to sell your items to the masses. And while there are exceptions like Erica and those mentioned on Wednesday's show, overall, Etsy is made up of millions of people and stores trying to sell homemade items, making it difficult for individuals to stand out now more than ever.

Also, creating crafts is costly. If you want your product to last you have to spend money on the best materials and supplies which can make something like a hand-sewn kitchen apron run about $50. In the time of a recession, it's difficult to find customers that are willing to pay more even for unique, one-of-a-kind items.

So, while we are aware the crafting business is booming and that there is money to be made, we don't believe it's as easy as it sounds. Do you?

Watch the clip above to hear Erica talk about some crafting success stories and head over to ABC to learn more about crafting.
