Detroit Mayoral Race: Lisa Howze Buys Super Bowl Ad, Mike Duggan And Benny Napoleon Lead Polls

Mayoral Candidate Turns To Super Bowl For Exposure

Talk about President Obama's inauguration may be cooling down, but the Detroit mayor's race is starting to ignite. State Rep. Lisa Howze (D-Detroit) plans to be the first mayoral candidate to take to the air waves with a Super Bowl television spot.

“The ad will focus on a brighter future for Detroit and its people. The 30-second ad will air during the Super Bowl in Metro Detroit and run during a week-long media campaign,” her campaign director Brandon Jessup wrote in a statement on her campaign website.

CBS will broadcast the Super Bowl on Feb. 3.

Howze, who is also a certified public accountant, announced her candidacy last February.

Meanwhile, things are also heating up between possible mayoral contenders Mike Duggan, a former Detroit Medical Center CEO, and Wayne County Sheriff Benny Napoleon. Although neither has officially declared their candidacies, the Mellman Group, a D.C.-based political research company, has found the two are "locked in a tight battle" that leaves other candidates trailing behind, the Detroit News reports.

Their Jan. 8 to 12 telephone poll of 600 likely voters discovered that 56 percent of respondents had a favorable impression of Duggan, and 14 percent were unfavorable towards him. Napoleon garnered a favorable response from 65 percent, while 19 percent were unfavorably disposed towards him. Just seven percent said they'd vote for current Mayor Dave Bing, who has yet to say whether he will run again, according to the Detroit News. The poll had a margin of error of 4 percent.

The poll was taken before former Detroit city attorney Krystal Crittendon announced she was considering a run.

The Democratic mayoral primary is scheduled for this August.
