Turn Old Cutoffs Into Dip Dye Shorts With This DIY (VIDEO)

Transform Your Boring Old Shorts With DIY Dip-Dye

We've seen '90s dip-dye make a resurgence on the runways of Proenza Schouler and Jeremy Scott, as well as the red carpet with celebrities like Drew Barrymore, Jaime King, and Demi Lovato sporting rainbow-colored 'dos. But if these designer threads are out of your budget (and the hairstyles wouldn't fit your work dress code), we've discovered an easy and affordable way to get in on the trend: DIY dip-dye shorts.

In the video above, FabSugar fashion reporter Allison McNamara takes us through seven steps to brighten up a pair of old shorts in a psychedelic hue. All you'll need is a pair of white denim cutoffs (light wash jeans will work, too), two Rit dye powders in contrasting shades, water, rubber gloves, plastic bins and garbage bags (to maintain the mess). Tip: Be sure to get your DIY on wearing clothes you won't mind staining.

McNamara pre-soaks the bottoms in cool water (to ensure the color adheres) and dyes the lightest part first. Then she flips it over, dips the bottom half in a darker dye and re-dips the fringe for a deeper finish. To give these do-it-yourself shorts an edge, silver studs are glued onto the pockets.

What do you think about these dip-dye shorts? Would you ever wear it? Tell us in the comments section.
