UCI Breaks World Dodgeball Record, Restores Honor To America

The students of UC Irvine certainly seem to have their priorities straight. The new school year might have just begun, but they have wasted no time in shattering the Guinness World Record for largest Dodgeball game. Over 1700 people participated in taking the crown, which had previously been held by Alberta, Canada. Try harder, Canada!

The LA Times describes the genesis of the idea:

Sam Shaw, a second-year student, said he had his eye on breaking the world record since just after he enrolled.

While sitting in his dorm room, he said, he came up with the idea to organize a mass-participation event at UC Irvine. After doing some research, he decided he could break a record while he was at it.

"I found that dodgeball was the perfect event, so I pursued it," he said.

This summer, Shaw teamed up with UC Irvine's student government, and members helped him turn his goal into reality.
