Edward Riley Killed, Teen Seriously Wounded In Woodlawn Shooting

A man was killed and a teenage boy was seriously injured Tuesday night when two gunmen opened fire on them in Chicago's Woodlawn neighborhood on the South Side.

The shootings took place at 7:55 p.m. in the 6400 block of South King Drive, outside Parkway Gardens, a public housing complex, according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

Edward Riley, 20, was shot multiple times by the gunmen and was pronounced dead later that evening, at 10:17 p.m. at John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital. A second victim, a 15-year-old boy, sustained a graze wound to his head but was expected to survive.

Ambulances attempting to get to the victims had a reportedly difficult time getting to them. The Chicago Tribune reports that crowds of people flooded onto the streets outside the buildings and police needed to be called in order to help disperse the group.

Police are still investigating the shooting and no suspects have yet been taken into custody. The Tribune reports that Riley had an extensive criminal record, including 26 arrests dating back only to 2009, including a conviction for the possession of a handgun with a defaced serial number.

The Woodlawn neighborhood has been plagued by gun violence in recent months, including the shooting death of 15-year-old Steven McGee on the 6000 block of South Prairie on Sept. 19, the wounding of four teens who were shot while sitting on a porch in the 6200 block of South Rhodes on Aug. 30 and the shooting of another 15-year-old boy on the 6500 block of South Rhodes on Aug. 28.
