Erleigh Norville Wiley Sworn In As Kaufman County District Attorney, Replaces Slain Prosecutor

DA Sworn In To Succeed Slain Texas Prosecutor

The Texas county where two prosecutors were fatally shot has a new district attorney.

Erleigh Norville Wiley was sworn in Monday to succeed slain Kaufman County District Attorney Mike McLelland, NBC DFW reports. Two suspects, Eric Lyle Williams and his wife, Kim Williams, both 46, remain in custody on capital murder charges for the deaths of McLelland, his wife and another top prosecutor.

Wiley, 50, was a prosecutor in Dallas County before the Texas Senate approved her to replace McLelland

You can’t be fearful. You just have to be prayerful,” Wiley told the Dallas Morning-News earlier in April prior to her swearing in. “You have to know that we’ve got good people that are going to protect us until justice is done. I think I can do this and not be scared.”

Her legal emphasis has been in the area of criminal law with particular interest in juveniles and cases involving children who have been abused and neglected. She served for fourteen years in the Dallas County District Attorney’s office. While working in the Dallas office, she rose to the position of Supervising attorney within the Juvenile Division assisting family courts in child protective services cases.

Wiley is married with two sons.
