NYA premieres a new music video today, entitled “Mania,” the follow-up to “Round N Round” and “Let Go.” Based in New York City by way of Tampa, Florida, NYA developed her artistry at the Straz Center for the Performing Arts, where she realized her passion for music. Ensuing studies at NYU allowed her to expand her musical horizons and develop her creativity.
NYA’s unique style of music encompasses pop, electronic music, soul and R&B flavors, amalgamating the various elements into a volatile sound radiating enduring classicism and à la mode flavors. It’s a sound persuaded by Aretha Franklin and Frank Sinatra, yet imbued with sleek modern articulation.
“Mania” opens with a down and dirty guitar oozing pungent R&B and pop tones. The stripped-down R&B melody pulses with a nastily tight rhythm generating a risky effluvium of dangerous sensuality. An intractable tangible energy rises asserting its raw vitality like a notorious reality. The potent thud of the bass drum aligned with the throbbing bassline exudes dark brooding absorption crawling with sweltering obsession. I love the “da, da, da, da, da” in time with the guitar, giving the song a synchronous axis.
NYA’s voice releases supercharged hi-watt hues of primal intensity. It’s full of blowtorch heat, dense scorching tones and lethal radioactive voluptuousness. There’s a lush dynamism to it that triggers wickedly delicious sensations to ripple through the atmosphere, saturating the air with Jezebel-like textures.
The lyrics to “Mania” slice through the air like a knife, as NYA reflects on the cataclysm come to her life, infecting her like the plague and imprisoning her.
“I’m a let you in on my darkest secret / I am tired of feeling like a reject / Doesn’t matter what I do or what I say / I feel like a failure at the end of the day / You’re stuck / Trying to get yourself out of a rut / As if being yourself wasn’t enough / Failure / Open up my soul you’ll see all the regrets / Use my skin to hide all of my secrets / Every little misstep is a full-blown mistake / Lodged in my heart like a chronic ache / You’re stuck / Trying to get yourself out of a rut.”
The video, directed by Andrew Morris, is immediately powerful, proximate with a dark indefinable malaise that runs deep. NYA grapples with a mania that’s pushing her to the brink. The video opens looking out from the resonant chamber of a guitar, the strings forming the bars of a prison. Swinging guitars hang from the ceiling. Attempting to free herself, NYA smashes the guitars on the floor. But release from her self-imposed mania is fugitive.
“Mania” is scrumptiously excellent! The melody oozes a feverish energy that’s intoxicating and beguiling, while the rhythm pulsates with opaque frenzied pressure. And NYA’s voice is the incubator for the tune’s raw visceral depth. In short, “Mania” is totally, completely red-hot!
