Fantasy Travel Images From Tom Phillips's Archive: Funny Family Portraits (PHOTOS)

Funny Family Portraits From Victorian Times

Ah, the family portrait. Today, this means probably standing together while someone holds up a smartphone.

In Victorian times, this meant a visit to a professional portrait photographer who would have prepared a series of potential aspirational scenes, from motorbikes to flying machines, around which the family could awkwardly gather.

As part of the artist Tom Phillips's unique photography archive, recently acquired by the Bodleian Library in Oxford, UK, these fantastic images come from the new book Fantasy Travel ($25, Bodleian Library). (See more images from the archive here)
