Film on Haiti's Restaveks to Play at Human Rights Film Festival

Mark Stanley, Pulitzer Center Staff

On February 1, the Pulitzer Center will present several films at the Human Rights Film Festival at Georgetown Law School. The videos highlight human rights issues around the world and are produced by Pulitzer Center supported journalists.

One film, Haiti's Restaveks, is particularly timely. Restaveks are child slaves in Haiti that make up about 10 percent of the youth population. Driven out of economic depravity, many Haitian families send their children to live with others as indentured servants. Because children are among those who suffer most in crisis areas, it is important to bring attention to Restaveks as Haiti struggles to recover from disaster.

Other films include Afghanistan Disabled, Jerusalem: War in My Land, Troubles in the Congo, Violence and Venom about the impact of homophobia and stigma on HIV/AIDs in Jamaica, and a selection of videos exploring local efforts to alleviate South Asia's water crisis.
