Forest Heights Academy: Baton Rouge School Finds Success Combining Art And Academics

This week, the U.S. Department of Education released a new video spotlighting the achievements of one of the nation's finest public magnet schools. Forest Heights Academy combines traditional academic curriculum with a comprehensive arts program, which includes drama, music, dance and visual arts classes.

The school has found enormous success through the use of its arts program and was awarded the title of "Blue Ribbon School" in 2008.

According to the Department of Education, Secretary Arne Duncan has explained the importance of arts education,

"First, the arts significantly boost student achievement, reduce discipline problems, and increase the odds that students will go on to graduate from college. Second, arts education is essential to stimulating the creativity and innovation that will prove critical to young Americans competing in a global economy."

A video produced by the History Channel takes an in-depth look at Forest Heights Academy.
