The Internal Revenue Service allows Americans that make less than $57,000 a year to file federal income tax returns for free –- but what about state returns?

Certain service providers allow you to file your state returns for free, depending on where you live and how much you make annually.

TurboTax, for example, offers free state return filing in 22 states including Arizona, New York and Oklahoma. To qualify, you must earn less than $31,000, qualify for an Earned Income Credit or have served as an active duty military member while earning less than $57,000 in 2012.

TaxHawk also offers free tax filing if you earn less than $20,000 and if you live in one of its 41 pre-approved states or the District Of Columbia.

Tax day is on Monday, April 15 this year. If you need more time to file your taxes, be sure to file for an extension on or before April 15.

Failure to file your taxes on time could result in a fine.
