Filing your tax returns doesn't need to burn a hole in your wallet. There are a number of services available that will help you file your taxes free of charge, especially if you make less than $57,000 a year.

Here are a few of them:

The IRS - The Internal Revenue Service offers free filing services for those making under $57,000 annually through its Free File program. Those earning less than $51,000 can meet face-to-face with certified tax preparers for free tax help.

MyFreeTaxes - This program provides free tax filing help through partnerships with Walmart, United Way, Goodwill Industries International, the National Disability Institute, among others. Its software is powered through H&R Block.

AARP - People making moderate incomes -- usually less than $100,000 -- can get free state and federal tax help from AARP. The organization will also help younger people file their taxes, according to the Associated Press.

VITA - The Volunteer Income Tax Assistance provides face-to-face help for those making less than $51,000. Help centers can typically be found in libraries, schools and other community centers.

TCE - Tax Counseling for the Elderly mainly assists those over the age of 60 with filing their taxes free of charge.

TaxHawk - Taxpayers making less than $20,000 can get free help filing state tax returns in 41 pre-approved states, including the District of Colombia.

TurboTax - In 22 states, TurboTax offers a free tax prep service for low-earners as well as qualified veterans.

The deadline for filing your 2012 taxes is Monday, April 15, 2013. If you don't file your taxes on time, you may have to pay a penalty.

If you need an extension, file an extension on or by April 15.
