Global Street Art: MOCAtv Series Heads To Yogyakarta, Indonesia (VIDEO)

In the fifth episode of MOCAtv's new series, Global Street Art, the YouTube-based project shines a spotlight on the graffiti scene of Yogyakarta, cultural capital on the Indonesian island of Java.

Yogyakarta is known for its fine art scene, celebrated as a hotspot for ballet, drama, music, poetry and even classical Javanese puppetry. It's home to the media art lab known as The House of Natural Fiber, an art-meets-science collective that presented bacterial beats at the New Museum in New York last year. Not surprisingly, the cultural center is also a bastion for street art activity, including the work of artists like Digie Sigit DS13 and Anti Tank Project. Both use their craft as a way of expressing their opinion on the social and political environment of their city.

"There are many movements, street art activities in Yogyakarta," says one artist Agung Geger in the video above. "Street artists work individually or as groups. Whether it's a personal expression or an expression of their opinions about... the political social conditions that occur in the society."
