Perry's Son Mocks Santorum's Sweater Vest

Griffin Perry, son of GOP presidential candidate Rick Perry, tweeted a jab at his father's rival on Thursday, using a college sports rivalry to rib Rick Santorum for his campaign outfits.

Jim Tressel is the former head coach of the Ohio State University football team, a Big 10 conference program. He resigned last year amid a scandal involving his players reportedly trading and selling team memorabilia for cash, tattoos and drugs, but his sweater-vested presence on the sidelines is still iconic of OSU football.

For the younger Perry, a Vanderbilt grad, Santorum's recent wardrobe decisions have provided a timely opportunity for him to joke that Santorum represents Tressel and Big 10 football, while his father represents the SEC, to which the University of South Carolina belongs. Teams from the two conferences are often bitter rivals.

The elder Perry, who finished fifth in this week's Iowa caucuses, has decided to stake the success of his presidential campaign on his performance in the Jan. 21 South Carolina primary. On Wednesday Perry tweeted: "And the next leg of the marathon is the Palmetto State... Here we come South Carolina!!!" with a picture of him giving the thumbs-up sign.

Griffin Perry isn't the only presidential surrogate infusing college football into the political sphere this week. Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.), who recently endorsed former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney, stood before a crowd in South Carolina on Thursday and joked about Clemson University's "victory" in Wednesday night's Orange Bowl. In reality, Clemson got rolled over by West Virginia University, losing 70-33.
