New Guinness Record-Holders Range From Hairiest To Scariest (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Not everyone is cut out to be a Guinness World Record holder.

It takes a lot of dedication to be No. 1 in something.

For instance, Rolf Buchholz, of Dortmund, Germany, didn't become the world's most pierced man on a whim.

Nope, it takes time to be pierced with 453 studs and rings all over his body, including 94 piercings in and around his lips, 25 in his eyebrows, eight in his nose and 278 in his genital area.

Likewise, Aevin Dugas of New Orleans, La., didn't decide overnight she was going to grow her Afro to a record-breaking circumference of 4 feet, 4 inches. It took time (and also five different conditioners whenever she washes the 'do).

For these champions, all the pain and sacrifice was worth it, because both are among the newest inductees in the "Guinness World Records 2012," which hit stores Sept. 15.

Others who are now part of this hallowed and tiny fraternity include Sarwan Singh of Canada, who holds the record for longest beard: 7 feet, 9 inches, and Pauline Potter of Sacramento, Calif., who, at 643 pounds, is now recognized as the world's heaviest woman.

But world records aren't just limited to humans.

Guinness editor-in-chief Craig Glenday admits there is an emphasis on the wild and woolly this year.

"We pulled out all the stops in this year’s edition of the book. From the world’s most dangerous records to extreme pioneers and apocalyptic predictions or beyond, we focused on mankind’s outliers to show the amazing array of superlatives the world has created,” he said, adding that much of the new material came from the growing fields of social media and alternative energies.
