Gypsy Rose Lee's '50s Style Wasn't Always Burlesque

A pioneer in the field of burlesque entertaining, Gypsy Rose Lee typically appeared in beaded numbers appropriate for her witty striptease acts. In this 1956 photo however, the American performer and actress, whose memoir inspired the 1962 musical film "Gypsy," accented a modest print dress with a bamboo purse and dark lipstick.

Cited as an inspiration by modern-day performers like Dita Von Teese, Lee appeared at high-society balls, and was known for her outlandish costumes, rather than her personal fashion -- like the '50s style full-coverage dresses she wore on outings with her son Erik. Can you think of another celebrity better known for their on-stage style?
