Hair Chalking How-To: Get Nicki Minaj, Jaime King And Lauren Conrad's Bright-Hued Hairdos (VIDEO, PHOTOS)

WATCH: Get Jaime King's Bright-Hued Hair With...Chalk?

Thanks to all the rainbow-colored hair girls walking around New York City, I've become bored with my dark curls. However, I refuse to give in to chemical-based hair dyes to brighten up my locks. Luckily, I've discovered an at-home method that produces salon-worthy results without the harsh ingredients: Hair chalking.

In the video above, BellaSugar reporter Kirbie Johnson transforms her blonde, beachy waves in under 10 minutes using pastel chalks. And I'm not talking about the kind your elementary teacher used to write out the multiplication tables. Sold at most art supply stores, these softer chalks are made up of pure pigments and natural binders.

Before giving this a go, be sure to wear plastic gloves and a towel to avoid a big mess. Twist each strand of hair before rubbing on the chalk to get a richer color. If you have light hair, you can apply dry. But if you are a brunette, it's best to spritz hair with water first to ensure color appears more vibrant. Try mixing different chalk shades to create an ombre effect and brush through to set. When you're ready to wash it out (it's super easy), be sure to use conditioner to bring back much-needed moisture to hair.

What do you think about hair chalking? Would you ever try it? Tell us in the comments section.
