Haiti Donations Slowing Down: Can We Keep It Going?

According to The Chronicle of Philanthropy, individuals have donated more than $470 million in the last two weeks to Haiti relief efforts, including the $58 million brought in from Friday's Hope For Haiti telethon.

This week, however, donation rates are already beginning to decline, and the money raised so far may not be enough to support recovery efforts deep into the future.

According to an article on CNNMoney.com, Hurricane Katrina inspired more giving over a longer period of time because of its closer proximity to most Americans. If Haiti begins to fade from public consciousness, it will be difficult for relief organizations to continue their good work after this current round of money is gone (while $470 is no small amount, experts estimate that initial relief efforts in Haiti alone will cost upwards of $3 billion).

What could be the answer? It's hard to say. CNN interviewed Stephen Jordan, executive director at the U.S. Chamber of Commerce's Business Civic Leadership Center, who says that celebrity endorsements will create minor peaks, but a downward trend in giving is hard to counteract.

You can still help, however, and are encouraged to keep giving. See HuffPost Impact's How You Can Help page for a comprehensive list of organizations accepting donations. You can also give right from your cell phone, with our list of Text 2 Give numbers.
