Hamas 'Tank' Looks More Flintstones Than War Machine

An international audience was reduced to snickers when the Hamas military brigade rolled out this rig.

The Palestinian group Hamas attempted to show off its military might Monday by unveiling a war rig it called a tank, which it claimed was built from salvaged Israeli tank parts.

The Hamas military wing unveiled the olive-colored war wagon during a memorial procession for several fighters recently killed in a Gaza tunnel collapse.

The nighttime ceremony, aired by Hamas's official Al-Aqsa TV, showed soldiers rolling out the vehicle on what appeared to be tracks. Tanks, heavily armored fighting vehicles, have been a staple of military land power since World War I.

"The Tufah neighborhood has a long history with enemy tanks and therefore we’re preparing for the day we shall meet those tanks," a representative of the Hamas military wing, Al-Qassam Brigades, said during the event, according to the Middle East Media Research Institute. "Let the locally produced vehicle move forward."

Pictures of the vehicle quickly surfaced on social media, showing it wasn't quite the threat that it may have appeared on TV.

The tracks didn't touch the ground, and a set of tires were spotted under its hull, suggesting the vehicle is nothing more than a shell on wheels, like a parade float.

Snickering broke out on social media, especially after a spokesman for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu took a poke at the vehicle.

"FYI, tanks aren't made of wood and don't run on wheels," the spokesman, Ofir Gendelman, tweeted on Monday.

Still, some seemed to accept the Hamas display at face value.

"The world amazed when Hamas created Tank," one Twitter user wrote. "May Allah give victory."
