Browne had previously announced his retirement from the sport to pursue a physical transition that would include surgery and hormone therapy. Browne has decided to put all of that on hold to continue to be an example for other LGBTQ athletes.

“It was not an easy decision,” Browne told Outsports, “but I feel that I still have more to give as an athlete especially an athlete of the LGBTQ community. I feel excited to keep playing the sport I love and to do more outreach and volunteer work in the New York City-New Jersey area.

“I wish I could also be transitioning but that’s not in the cards for me right at this moment.”

Last season Browne’s team, the Buffalo Beauts, won the inaugural NWHL championship. Earlier this summer he was highlighted by the Olympic Channel in a new documentary series.
