Hickenlooper Staffer Amused That Attack Ads Cite His Own Reporting

Hickenlooper Attack Ads Cite Hick's Own Staffers As Sources

It didn't take very long for critics to debunk many of the claims of the Republican Governors Association's (RGA) "No Jobs John" campaign against Denver Mayor and gubernatorial candidate John Hickenlooper. The ads, which will cost the RGA between $550,000 and $575,000, attempt to tie Hickenlooper to current Governor Bill Ritter, asserting that both Hickenlooper and Ritter killed thousands of jobs in Colorado by raising taxes.

As the Denver Daily news reports, the Hickenlooper campaign may have had an easier time responding because many of the ads' assertions are are based on the writing of reporters now working as staffers for both Hickenlooper and Governor Ritter.

Both Hickenlooper spokesman George Merritt--a former Denver Post and Associated Press Reporter--and Ritter staffer Myung Oak Kim--a former Rocky Mountain News reporter--were cited as sources in the RGA's attacks.

Merritt also pointed out that several of the claims were taken from editorials, not news stories.

The ads are expected to run through the end of May.
