Clinton was specifically responding to some late-night tweets in which Trump criticized former Miss Universe Alicia Machado, calling her “disgusting” and accusing her of having a sex tape. Clinton called the tweets “unhinged, even for Trump.”
Clinton questioned why Trump would send the tweets at all, much less in the middle of the night:
Clinton said Machado ― who Trump called “Miss Piggy” and “an eating machine” after she gained weight during her tenure as Miss Universe ― “deserves praise” for standing up to the GOP nominee. Machado, who is from Venezuela but is now a U.S. citizen, has said she will be voting for Clinton in November.
Clinton suggested Trump’s continued attacks on Machado prove his temper makes him unfit to be president:
Clinton noted how Trump has publicly harassed other famous women as well, including comedian Rosie O’Donnell and businesswoman Kim Kardashian.
She also noted his questionable statements about women in general, including comments he made in a 2004 interview with NBC calling pregnancy an “inconvenience” for business owners:
Clinton dubbed Trump’s continued comments “his Machado meltdown”:
CORRECTION: An earlier version of this post said Alicia Machado is from Argentina. She is from Venezuela.
