From the outside, John and Kari Boiler's home in Manhattan Beach, California, definitely impresses, with its concrete and wood facade and bright orange door. But, the laid-back beachy appeal on the exterior is quite different from the style indoors, as our friends at California Home + Design show us in this sneak peak of the space.
Contemporary and sleek, the interior of the Boilers' home features open living spaces and lots of steel and glass, thanks to help from architect James R. Meyer of Lean Arch. The Boilers had scrapped everything in the building when they first moved in except for the X-steel-frame details that ran up one side of the building. "The only thing that has been a constant is the steel structure," says Kari. To complement the industrial look, a spiral staircase was also installed to connect the three separate floors.
But, perhaps the most intriguing design aspect about the home is in the master bedroom, where the bath is left completely open -- no walls, no doors. "We’ve spent our lives in small bedrooms and baths, so opening them to one another made the space more inspiring,” says Kari, adding “And yes, we are hedonists, so we wanted a steam shower and ample bath.” While we can understand the need for more space, we decidedly see it as a daring design move. Especially since the master bedroom is connected to a large open deck -- the one other thing that the Boilers kept from the previous home.
