Travel Tips: How to Avoid Cankles When Flying

Everybody knows it, but not everybody does it! Bring water with you and drink lots of it! Many of us don't drink enough water so that we won't have to go to the bathroom every five minutes. Go to the bathroom! DO NOT retain liquids!

Have you ever gotten off a plane and wondered... where are my ankles? Why can't I see them? Well, your ankles have disappeared thanks to cabin pressure, dehydration and lack of blood circulation!

One of the major consequences of flying is swelling. And one of the consequences of swelling are cankles (when you can no longer tell the difference between your calf and your ankle).

If you are a frequent flyer and especially if you are always taking long trips, take note of these tips!

1. Move around!

Obviously, this is much easier to do if you are in an aisle seat. But, even if you aren't, who cares! Jump over those guys next to you. Do whatever it takes to get some extra circulation.

2. Stretch

When you walk around, make sure you stretch a bit, too. Stretch to the side...

touch your feet...

It feels great!

3. Compression Socks

These puppies really, really help with circulation.

There are all sorts of brands to choose from.

I always keep these in my bag when I travel. As soon as I sit down on the plane, I take off my shoes and put them on. Plus, they are very comfy!

4. Do feet exercises!

flex your heels, do some circles...

As long as you are moving your ankles, you will put a stop to the swelling.

5. Stay hydrated

Everybody knows it, but not everybody does it! Bring water with you and drink lots of it! Many of us don't drink enough water so that we won't have to go to the bathroom every five minutes. Go to the bathroom! The whole point is to get water coming in, and water going out. DO NOT retain liquids!
