Chinese religious life revolves around a calendar of festivals. Some festivals are celebrated by the family, but others draw together the entire community.

These two videos were taken at the festival of the goddess Mazu in Leizhou, at the very southern tip of the Chinese mainland. Mazu is a patron of sailors and fishermen and is worshiped by Chinese communities all along the coast, with ceremonies that last for days. The videos show two different faces of her festival: a votive procession in the countryside and scenes from inside one of the main Mazu temples in Leizhou City.
