As the messy debate on health care nears its conclusion, I want to take just a moment to look at the next major issue likely to be taken up by Congress: financial reform.

The folks at Bankster have put together this holiday video that frames the choice nicely.

The reform proposals currently before Congress won't work. They leave the banks big and powerful enough to undo whatever progress we make in oversight and regulation. It is in no one's best interest for banks to have that much power.

Break Up The Big Banks and our partners are fighting for real reforms like overall size limits, capital requirements that increase as banks get bigger, limits on the interconnectedness of financial firms, and an overall separation of commercial and investment banking.

This last idea is already gaining momentum with the introduction of the McCain-Cantwell proposal to do just that. As we look forward to the financial reform debate taking center stage early in 2010, we will be as strong as you make us. Sign the petition.
