How are you celebrating the back-to-school season? Now that your kids (grandchildren, nieces, and nephews) are back to school, I hope your plan includes taking some time for yourself -- and ramping up your book promotion campaign!

Did you think this was going to be a discussion about leaf peeping and homework? Think again. This is an argument for making the most of the new school year so that you can get the benefits of pursuing your book promotion goals.

Many authors and publishers are back from summer vacations. Now that they're back at their offices (or virtual offices), you should be, too.

I understand. It's challenging to motivate yourself to get back to work after taking a couple of weeks (or months) off. But here are a few motivational thoughts to consider:

  1. You've had enough downtime! So have media decision makers. This is the perfect time to forge ahead and pitch your story ideas, and your book, to the media.

  • You're already behind. A new television season has begun. There are new shows to pitch, so you have some housekeeping to do just to catch up. You don't want to begin a new book promotion campaign with an old media list.
  • The competition is back. Finally, if you're motivated to begin your book promotion campaign for no other reason, consider this one. Other authors and publishers will be pitching their messages and books to the media. Can you afford to wait until they've scored all of the editorial space and air time before you begin your book promotion campaign?
  • Of course, it's hard to segue from those long, languid summer days and get back to work. But look at it this way. Pumpkin-flavored coffee and tea, and warm apple cider are available, and so are freshly-baked goods just filled with apples and cinnamon. You get to sip and snack while you're beginning your book promotion campaign. You have no complaints. Right?
