James Murphy's Le Fooding Appearance Lets LCD Soundsystem Helmsman Show Cooking Chops

If you listen closely to LCD Soundsystem's discography, you get glimmers that point to frontman James Murphy's love of food. When he's talking about a breakup, in "Someone Great," he's upset to discover that "the coffee isn't even bitter."

But now that the group has disbanded, Murphy has apparently decided to let his inner foodie hang all the way out. Melena Ryzik pens a great missive for the New York Times' Diner's Journal from a Le Fooding event in Manhattan this past weekend, at which Murphy acted as the sous chef for renowned Paris gastronaut Inaki Aizpitarte, of Le Chateaubriand. (Le Fooding is a French organization that puts on events that celebrate delicious food outside the confines of stuffy temples of haute cuisine.) Wylie Dufresne of WD-50 griped that their line was longer than his. And apparently Murphy held his own alongside the culinary master. Ryzik writes:

Mr. Aizpitarte praised Mr. Murphy as an assistant. "He was serious," he said. "He didn’t want to come be lightly" involved. "He wanted to participate."

In the following video interview from Good Food Revolution, Murphy explains how we became a foodie after eating "a lot of processed cheese and Wonderbread" growing up in suburban New Jersey. He also reveals his best food experiences, in Brazil at a "crazy meat freakout," in Japan eating authentic tonkatsu and in Paris eating a revelatory salad of raw vegetables.
