Jane Fonda is known to cut a stylish figure on the red carpet, so it might surprise you to learn that one iconic actress didn't find her glamorous enough -- at a certain time.
In an interview with Sandra Bernhard on her Sandyland SiriusXM radio show, Fonda recalled a "prickly" exchange with Katharine Hepburn about her image.
"I remember Katharine Hepburn saying to me on the set of 'On Golden Pond,' 'You never could've made it back then,'" Fonda said, laughing. "She was a prickly one. I just wasn't glamorous enough. She hated the fact that I didn't put enough attention to how I presented myself."
As Bernhard questioned Hepburn's comments, Fonda reminded her that the actress "had a look."
"She taught me that self-conscious isn't necessarily bad, that it's important to be aware of how you present [yourself]," Fonda said. "Not just in the ... what you have on and how you look, but your presentation as a human being on all levels was important. I'm thinking I give her more credit than she deserves, but at least how you look and what you dress, she felt, was very important and she hated the fact that at the time I didn't put any attention to it."
A not so fond(a) memory, if you will.
These days, the 78-year-old actress is happier with her look and with her life.
"Spiritually and energetically, I feel younger than when I was 20 and 30," Fonda said in an interview with the Los Angeles Times in December 2015. "It all has to do with attitude and how you see life ... I wasn't happy back then when I was 20 and 30; I was depressed. Now I see my past, and I see a future -- and I feel like it’s going to be a good one."
