Jason Shawn Alexander's 'SIC' Blends Figurative Painting And Graphic Illustration (PHOTOS, VIDEO)

Batman Illustrator Goes Classical

Jason Shawn Alexander (the graphic illustrator) and Jason Shawn Alexander (the figurative artist) are almost like Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde. His graphics have appeared in Dark Horse, Warner Brothers and D.C. comics and are eternally slick in black-and-white. His paintings, however, glorify every rough patch, mistake and spontaneous smudge in their making, creating a work of art at once not fully formed yet already in a state of decay.

The comics seem to depict a timeless alternate reality while the massive-scale paintings, most of which are over five square feet, drip with mortal imperfection. In critic James Scarborough's words: Alexander "may be the midwife who gives birth to these figures but, like a newborn child, these figures will continue to mature and develop."

For the first time in a gallery setting, Alexander is combining his two personas into one. Intense paintings and iconic illustrations, including his images for Batman, will appear together for this exhibition sure to please the Comic-Con and art crowds alike.
