Jesse Cheng, UC Student Regent, Under Fire For Sexual Assault Allegations

Protesters Want UC Student Regent Ousted Over Sexual Assault Allegations

Protesters gathered at the University of California Board of Regents meeting Wednesday to call for UC Student Regent Jesse Cheng to step down.

Cheng, a UC-Irvine senior, was arrested but not charged in the sexual assault of a former girlfriend last year.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, UC-Irvine's Office of Student Conduct "determined that Cheng touched the former girlfriend without her consent, a finding that Cheng denies."

Cheng spoke about the issue to the New University in February. "I currently don't have any plans to step down, especially because I would never step down as an admission of guilt," he said, "because I'm not guilty." He did not attend the regents meeting Wednesday.

UC Regents Chairman Russell Gould told the Chronicle that the board is taking the issue "very seriously."

Cheng had previously been lauded by national media for his advocacy efforts.
