Joe Scarborough reacted to Republican criticism of the Obama administration over Benghazi with extreme skepticism on Wednesday.

In the wake of the deadly attacks, Republicans have accused the State Department of failing to secure the American compound, and the White House of covering up any deficiencies. Some GOP lawmakers have said that the allegations will grow into a full-blown scandal for the Obama administration.

"Come on, man," Scarborough said in response on "Morning Joe." He recalled talking to one GOP congressman about the issue, and saying, "Are you kidding me?"

“I want the investigation,” said the MSNBC host, who has said that there should be long hearings on how events unfolded. “But I don’t understand why conservatives believe that this is somehow the holy grail politically.”

"For my conservative friends on the internet: if there is wrongdoing, I want it sniffed out and I want them thrown in jail if they've committed crimes, blah blah blah. But this is not the Republican pathway to victory in 2014," Scarborough stressed, saying that Benghazi was not "their Watergate."

"There is this sense that there's gotta be something," Todd agreed. "They’ve got to be able to get this guy on scandal, rather than the fact they won on the issues in 2010 when they were able to win on health care."

Scarborough later added that he was "not brushing aside any allegations. The state dept has already been hammered, Hillary Clinton has testified... and there should be more coming because the fact is Hillary Clinton and the State Department did not heed the concerns of an ambassador who ended up dead. That does warrant investigation."
