Jonny Gomes Records Unassisted Double Play During Red Sox-Mariners Game (VIDEO)

WATCH: Red Sox OF Pulls Off Unusual Double Play

Red Sox outfielder Jonny Gomes made a key, and unusual, defensive play in extra innings on Wednesday night to help Boston climb back into first place in the AL East.

With Boston and Seattle tied at four in the top of the 15th inning, Michael Saunders smacked a 1-2 pitch to left field with Raul Ibanez on second base. Gomes rushed to it and made a diving catch. With Ibanez having already rounded third base, Gomes decided to trot toward second base to complete the double play himself.

Boston went on to win in the bottom of the 15th thanks to a walk-off single by Stephen Drew.

"To tell the truth, you know, myself as kind of a fan of the game, history of the game, you know, number guy, it definitely was on purpose," Gomes said, via the Boston Herald. "I've been waiting years to do that. That's why I'm glad I got it on my resume."
