If you thought that Johnny Weir would mellow as he settled into married life, think again.
The three-time U.S. champion figure skater, who tied the knot with Georgetown Law graduate Victor Voronov on New Year's Eve in New York City, is instead kicking off 2012 by mounting a competitive skating comeback, with his sights set on the 2014 Winter Olympics in Sochi, Russia.
Attending Veuve Clicquot's midwinter fete at Manhattan's Standard Hotel on Wednesday, Weir, who just returned from his honeymoon in Punta Cana, described his decision to compete again after a two-year hiatus as a "delicate" one.
"I miss the process of getting prepared for a competition," he told The Huffington Post as he geared up alongside fellow Olympic vet Sasha Cohen for a "Glee"-inspired routine filled with plenty of trademark theatrics on the hotel's rink. "I miss being thin and hot and creative, and [having] all these juices flowing. While I'm still young enough to actually perform, represent my country and show the world my sparkle, I want to be able to do it."
Of course, Weir's signature sass hasn't been totally absent from our world. In the two years since the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver, where he finished in sixth place, the 27-year-old has written a memoir, starred in a Sundance Channel television series and endorsed M.A.C. cosmetics.
And then there's that fledgling music career: in early 2011, Weir released the pop single "Dirty Love," which was a success on both the Japanese and U.S. dance charts. Though Weir says he's recorded a follow-up song with gay rap artist Cazwell (set to drop later this year), fans shouldn't expect him to abandon the ice for music, or any other realm, just yet.
"Music is fun, but I'm an ice skater," he explained. "I may sing sings and do shows, make movies and other things...that's all well and good and I enjoy it, and I would never trade any of those for anything. But figure skating is who I am."
So what does Voronov think of his husband eyeing another shot at Olympic glory in 2014? "Victor is very supportive; he actually pushed me more than anyone else to return," said Weir. "He's like, 'I want to see what you can do...I want to be proud, I want to cheer.'"
Though he'll be training throughout 2012, the comeback kid -- who will maintain his own last name professionally but has taken the surname Weir-Voronov -- still hopes to find time to channel his inner domestic diva. Currently amidst plans for a more elaborate wedding ceremony this summer, Weir sounds a lot more old-fashioned than you'd expect.
"I'm going to be a happy housewife," he said with a laugh. "I'm going to be washing boxers and cooking and doing all those sorts of housewife duties. I just want to be happy and proud of every single day."
