Once Canada's biggest star, Justin Bieber is now getting little love in his home country. Canada's annual music awards, the Junos, were held Sunday night, and while he didn't attend the awards show, Bieber still made major waves.
The 20-year-old singer was awarded the honor of Juno Fan Choice Award for the fourth year in a row, but chose not to attend to accept the award. When his name was announced, it was overshadowed by a chorus of boos from the crowd.
Bieber, who has made more headlines for his controversial behavior than for his music as of late, has been booed at an awards show before. At last May's Billboard Music Awards, he was heckled by the audience when accepting Billboard's Milestone Award.
Biebs also received similar feedback at one of his own concerts and at multiple sports games.
After the Junos, Biebs took to Twitter to remind his fans he would be there as long as they love him.
While the fans at the Junos were clearly not on Justin's side Sunday night, some other pop stars voiced their support. One of the show's hosts, musician Serena Ryder, spoke in favor of Bieber during her own acceptance speech, and fellow Canadians Tegan and Sara spoke out on the crowd's reaction backstage, saying the boos were "not very Canadian."
“I think that Justin Bieber is actually a very talented artist and I think a lot of people just like to pile on and sort of make fun of him, but we have to remember that he has a mom and a dad and a grandma and a grandpa and he’s actually really talented," Tegan said. "He’s been famous since he was a little kid. He’s made some mistakes, but God knows Sara and I have made actually way worse mistakes when we were teenagers and we weren’t famous."
