These days, our knowledge of celebrities too often originates with paparazzi images and snarky quotes by anonymous "insiders." After a while, it's easy to forget that stars are real people. That's why HuffPost Celebrity decided to launch its all-new #nofilter quick-fire question-and-answer series. Because how well do you know someone until they've shared their guiltiest pleasures?
Since her rise to fame on "American Idol" 11 years ago, Kelly Clarkson has become known for her immense vocal talent and her warm, candid personality. The latter was apparent when the pop superstar took our #nofilter challenge.
What's your guiltiest pleasure?
Chips and salsa.
When do you feel most at peace?
When I’m in my bed at home, which is rare.
What's the most unusual thing you have in your purse or wallet?
I don’t know if it’s unusual, I carry my sweetener on me -- my Stevia Vanilla Creme sweetener. I always have a book and I always have deodorant because I don’t like smelling, ever. And I usually have a toothbrush and toothpaste because I don’t want to have stuff in my teeth.
What sense would you be most afraid to lose?
Hearing.
What technology do you hope will be invented in the next 10 years?
I’m really pissed off that we have not learned how to warp somewhere. Like, beam me up. I figured by now, with “The Jetsons,” “Star Trek,” someone had it right. But no, I’m really mad about that. I feel like we should be able to materialize somewhere. It would really help out with my work if I could just beam somewhere.
Is a good friend hard to come by?
No, I don’t think so. I think everybody screws up, but at the end of the day I think there are genuinely good people out there that love you and really want to support you. I want to not be jaded and say yes.
What's the silliest thing you've ever lied about?
I’m so blunt. I don’t really lie.
What’s the working title of your autobiography?
Run!
What or who is overrated right now?
Twerking. I’m over twerking. It’s funny, I get it, but ...
What happens in your recurring dream?
You know, I’ve had this recurring dream since I was a kid -- this is actually really weird and I don’t think I’ve ever told anybody this -- that I’m in a fire in a house and I hear this little boy crying and then I find him and he’s actually older than me because I’m like 5 years old and he’s 7. And every time, I reach out to have him hold my hand and he reaches out, and then the dream ends. I don’t know if he survived. I don’t know what the hell that means.
When do you feel most anxious?
I’m kind of a high-energy person. The most anxious I’ve ever been was singing at the inauguration. And when I feel a lack of control.
Describe one time you thought "This is harder than it looks."
Yoga. I started doing yoga and it always looks like simple stretching. That is a lie, my friend. It is hard.
What are you most afraid of?
I think everyone’s fear is being alone. I don’t want to die alone. That seems sad.
What's one thing you do when you're alone that you wouldn't do in front of someone else?
Actually, I write alone. I don’t usually write with people in the room. Every song that you see my name on, I’ve written the lyrics and melody on my own. I don’t like to be vulnerable, apparently.
Is it okay to recline your seat on an airplane?
Yes, but it is not okay to get pissed off at the person in front of you that does recline their chair because the recline button is there. You’re supposed to be able to use it. And they would have more room if they simply reclined back as well.
When's the last time you cried?
Last night. I’ve been a ball of emotions. Brandon [Blackstock, her fiance] was laughing at me. We were watching “The X Factor” right before we went to bed and he was laughing at me because the stories, they reel you in. Whether it’s “The Voice” or “Idol,” they reel you in, man. And I just start crying, I’m so happy for them.
Kelly Clarkson is currently working with Green Mountain Coffee to celebrate Fair Trade Month through “Great Coffee, Good Vibes, Choose Fair Trade,” a campaign to raise awareness for Fair Trade Certified products. Clarkson visited a coffee farm in Peru to witness the positive impact Fair Trade can have on coffee-farming communities.
