UPDATE: 8:10 AM -- The Coast Guard is resuming its search for Kent Morton Thursday morning after suspending the effort late Wednesday night.

"If you look at the height of that drop, that's not a very good survival rate," Detroit Fire Department Chief Gregory Williams told Local 4.

UPDATE: 11:20 PM -- The Coast Guard ended their search for Kent Morton on Wednesday night after searching an area of nearly 300 square nautical miles, according to a release. "The decision to suspend an active search and rescue case is the most difficult decision that our operators face," said Chief Petty Officer Gabriel Settel, command center supervisor, Coast Guard Sector Detroit.

The Coast Guard began searching for a worker who fell from the Ambassador Bridge into the Detroit River on Wednesday afternoon.

The Free Press identified the man as Kent Morton, 27, from Garden City.

After he fell, witnesses say Morton resurfaced several minutes later. They called bridge security at approximately 1:45 p.m., and search crews began looking within five minutes, according to the Coast Guard.

Morton was working for a contractor of the bridge company. The Associated Press reported that he was doing painting and welding work.

Search crews from the Coast Guard, Detroit Police Department and Michigan State police searched by boat and helicopter and conducted dive searches. As of 4:50 p.m., the Coast Guard had done a surface search to Fighting Island and an aerial search to Grosse Ile, two islands south of the bridge.

"At this point we are continuing to search until any new information comes up," said Ninth District Coast Guard Chief Petty Officer Gabriel Settel. "We'll continue our search into the night."

The Bridge Company also released a statement:

Our first concern is for the health and welfare of the man who fell. Our prayers are with him and we hope for a positive outcome to this incident.

We know the risk involved in this kind of work and that our contractors abide by the highest safety standards."

It's unknown whether Morton was using safety equipment.

This is a developing story.
