Authorities in Indiana are reportedly trying to determine if a link exists between a registered sex offender and the unsolved 2011 disappearance of Indiana University student Lauren Spierer.
According to Indianapolis’s WXIN News, Bloomington police and the FBI raided a Martinsville home on Thursday because an individual who used to live at the property may be connected to the disappearances of Spierer and possibly two other individuals.
Cadaver dogs brought to the scene indicated they had found potential evidence, but a team of anthropologists that was called in to assist found nothing, according to the station. However, police were spotted towing a vehicle away from the scene before the property was turned back over to the owners.
People reports the home police searched was once the residence of 35-year-old Justin Wagers, who was arrested on an indecent exposure charge in August 2015. Wagers has an extensive criminal record that involves arrests for sex-related offenses, Indianapolis’s WTHR-TV reported.
"I want them to investigate," Justin Wagers' father, Doug Wagers, told WTHR. "I want them to do a thorough investigation. I want them to know, without reasonable doubt. Do an investigation. Do it."
Authorities have yet to comment on what prompted Thursday's search. They also have yet to release information on the other two cases they are reportedly investigating. Calls made to Bloomington police by The Huffington Post were not immediately returned on Friday.
"There is no additional information to release regarding this matter at this time," the FBI said in a statement.
Spierer was from Westchester County, New York, and was last seen on June 3, 2011, at around 4:30 a.m. just a few blocks from her Smallwood Plaza apartment. Multiple law enforcement agencies have conducted searches for her.
"Not knowing and not having her is devastating and there’s just no words," Spierer's mother, Charlene Spierer, told WXIN News on Thursday. "It’s very hard to live with every single day."
Justin Wagers' attorney, Chris Eskew, told WTHR-TV that his client has "no knowledge regarding the disappearance of Lauren Spierer or any other missing person."
Lauren Spierer is described as a white female who is 4 feet, 11 inches tall with a slender build. She has blue eyes and blond hair. She was last seen wearing a white tank top with a light-colored shirt over it and black stretch pants.
