LIRR Wants to Redo Its Penn Station Space

The Long Island Rail Road is eyeing changes to its cramped, dingy space at Penn Station.

Railroad officials had been delaying major alterations to its concourse in the nation's busiest train station because of expected disruptions stemming from a new rail tunnel under construction to New Jersey. But New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie killed the tunnel in October because of rising costs.

Penn Station's warren of underground passageways and tracks connecting three railroads and the New York City subway system are difficult even for frequent users to navigate. Among the fixes officials are looking at: better signage, improved passenger flow, higher ceilings and natural light.
