LoDo Beat Victims FRAUD: Tapes Suggest Cop Pressured Victim Into Exaggerating Injuries

DENVER (CBS4) - Court tapes obtained in a CBS4 investigation suggest the lead detective in a series of racially-motivated downtown Denver assaults exaggerated and fabricated injuries inflicted on a victim of an Aug. 23 attack. The victim of the attack, Allen Andes, says Detective Paul Baca "pressured" him to lie about his injuries. The more serious the injuries, the more serious the criminal charges, and the more potential jail time for suspects.

Andes was jumped in LoDo Aug. 23 by a group of eight to 10 young black men. They beat him up and stole $40. It was one of about two dozen racially-motivated robberies and beatings last summer and fall in and around downtown Denver. Within hours of the attack on Andes, Det. Paul Baca interviewed Andes -- a financial advisor -- at Denver Police headquarters about the mugging. The interview was taped. Noticing Andes had a broken tooth, Baca directly asked the victim, "Did they chip your teeth?"
