Dogs are known for being loyal but Lucy, a 6-year-old pit bull from Ft. Meyers, Florida, may have paid the ultimate sacrifice for her family, according to News-Press.

“She was everything to me, like my little girl, my baby, my daughter,” Rodrick Gibbons told WBBH, who raised Lucy with his wife, Victoria Snyder, since the dog was a pup.

"She knew who her family was, so she really did a good job."

Lucy's devotion was put to the test last Friday when Lisa Potts, Gibbon’s mother, was returning home from a four-day hospital stay and found her ex-boyfriend, Walter Williams, asleep in her apartment, according to News-Press.

An argument ensued. Williams allegedly became violent, smashing Potts’ TV with a crowbar and punching her in the face.

Gibbons, who lives in the same complex as her mother, heard Potts screaming for help.

Police said the 48-year-old man had a knife in his hand when Gibbons, two of Gibbons' brothers, Snyder and Lucy entered Potts’ apartment.

The canine sprang into action and was stabbed in the scuffle.

"Lucy lunged at him and he caught her right in the neck.... That's when all three of my sons jumped on Walter and held him down to the ground," Potts told WBBH.

One of Potts' sons was stabbed in the arm, but the family maintains that Lucy’s bravery made the difference.

“If it wasn’t for her, man, I’m telling you. He could have killed one of us,” Potts said.

According to News-Press, Williams was charged with battery. The Huffington Post reached out to the Fort Myers Police Department did not return a request for comment.

After the attack, Lucy’s family comforted her as they waited for Lee County Domestic Animal Services to take the wounded dog to an animal clinic. Lucy died the next day.

“She did her job. She did what she was supposed to do, and I am going to make sure that she leaves her name on this Earth,” Gibbons said.

Lefty took a bullet for her owner.
