Chelsea Manning will be released from prison this week. As a transgender musician and one of her close friends and supporters, I wanted to do something to surprise Chelsea, and remind her of just how much support she has as she transitions back into the free world following 7 years of incarceration for speaking truth to power.

So I organized an online benefit album, called Hugs for Chelsea, featuring a wide range of artists including Tom Morello (Rage Against the Machine), Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Against Me!, Graham Nash (Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young), Amanda Palmer, Talib Kweli, Kimya Dawson, Anti-Flag, and lots more.

100 percent of the proceeds from the album will go directly to Chelsea. And it features unreleased tracks from great folks like Ted Leo, Mirah, and Screaming Females.

Check out the full album here, and please show your support for freedom of expression and human rights by grabbing a digital copy and supporting Chelsea. The money will help ensure that her basic needs are met as she enters this next stage of her life.

Still unsure? Ask yourself: what would Michael Stipe do?
