Mark Wahlberg On 'Iron Man': Actor Jokes That He Wants To Take Over Robert Downey Jr.'s Role

The Surprising Role Mark Wahlberg Wants

In a recent interview with Yahoo! Movies U.K. about "2 Guns," Wahlberg spoke about adding a superhero character to his ever-growing resume.

"I would like to take over the 'Iron Man' franchise for Robert Downey," Wahlberg joked. "No, it’s one of those things where I kind of like playing real people, [but] I’ve never been asked."

Even if Wahlberg wants to play Tony Stark, it's doubtful he'd have a shot anyway: It was announced in June that Downey Jr. has already signed on to reprise his role of Iron Man in two upcoming sequels to "The Avengers," the first of which arrives in 2015.

Not that Wahlberg is hurting for his own work. He starred in three movies this year already ("Broken City," "Pain & Gain," and "2 Guns"), and has "Lone Survivor" due out in December. Wahlberg also filmed a leading role in Michael Bay's fourth "Transformers" film, which is set for release in June of 2014.
