Matt Besler Will Miss U.S. vs. Mexico World Cup Qualifier Because Of This Dive By Costa Rica Striker (VIDEO)

U.S. goalkeeper Tim Howard thought that Costa Rica striker Joel Campbell's dive "was comical at the time.”

It didn't seem funny a short while later when defender Matt Besler was hit with a yellow card that will keep him out of the United States' clash with Mexico. Having received his second yellow card of the 2014 World Cup qualifying cycle on Campbell's flop during a match against the Ticos last week, Besler will not be available to U.S. soccer coach Jurgen Klinsmann on Tuesday night in Columbus.

Campbell conspicuously went down in a heap in the 78th minute on Friday night after walking behind Besler while the action was elsewhere on the field. Arriving on the scene with Campbell writhing on the grass, Mexican referee Marco Antonio Rodriguez reached for his yellow card after seemingly getting some input from another member of the officiating crew.

As noted by Sports Illustrated senior writer Grant Wahl, the dubious decision by a Mexican official ahead of the Yanks' clash with Mexico didn't exactly make CONCACAF look good.

Besler wasn't the only American to pick up a questionable yellow in the late stages of the 3-1 loss to Costa Rica. Striker Jozy Altidore saw yellow late and will miss the Mexico match, too.

“I look at Jozy’s yellow card and it’s unnecessary from both ends, from the referee and Jozy," Klinsmann said ahead of the Mexico match, via MLS.com. "In the 92nd minute, you don’t give a yellow card for a little push. And Matt Besler’s was based on a fake from [Campbell] that the linesman actually [fell for].”

Clearly upset in the moment, Besler felt even worse after seeing a replay of the incident. He shared his frustration on Twitter.
