Met Costume Institute Gala: A Look Back At The Most Memorable Outfits (PHOTOS)

PHOTOS: Most Memorable Outfits From The Costume Institute Gala

Here's why we live for the Metropolitan Museum of Art's annual Costume Institute Gala every year: everyone, in the fashion world or not, brings their style A-game. Co-hosted by Anna Wintour and Vogue, the event raises millions of dollars to benefit the museum's Costume Institute since the first ball in 1948. Throughout the years, over-the-top themes have included "Extreme Beauty: The Body Transformed," "Superheroes: Fashion and Fantasy" and last year's "Alexander McQueen: Savage Beauty." This year's gala honors the influence of the late surrealist designer Elsa Schiaparelli on Miuccia Prada with "Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations."

While the accompanying exhibits are top-notch the most memorable part of the exhibit is always the star-studded gala on opening night. And all of the outrageous outfits worn on that special evening. Even the Oscars don't have a red carpet this outstanding.

With the Costume Institute Gala taking place on this coming Monday, we have taken a look back at some of the most memorable outfits from the past thirty years. Take a peek in our gallery below to see Cher, Princess Diana, Marilyn Manson and more:
