Metrorail Delays Expected This Weekend; Red Line Crunch Expected Downtown

Red Line Crunch Expected This Weekend

WASHINGTON -- Although Metro's rail passengers will get a reprieve from track work the Christmas and New Year's Eve holiday weekends, the transit agency is preparing for one more round of construction work that's starting Friday night and will wrap up by the time the system opens for business on Monday.

The most significant work will be on the Red Line, where trains will share the same track through the downtown core -- between Dupont Circle and Judiciary Square. Metro is continuing work to stabilize a municipal water main that passes through the northern end of the Farragut North station beneath L Street NW. There will be service through the work zone every 20 minutes. Additional trains will run on the Red Line outside the work zone between 9:30 a.m. and 9 p.m. and will turn back at Dupont Circle and Judiciary Square for their respective terminals in Montgomery County. Expect major crowding on downtown platforms.

There will be reduced service on the Orange Line as trains share the same track between the East Falls Church and West Falls Church staitons. Trains will leave the Vienna and New Carrollton terminals every 20 minutes.

Also, Blue Line and Yellow Line trains will share the same track between the National Airport and Braddock Road stations with Blue Line trains also sharing the same track between the Stadium-Armory and Addison Road stations. Blue Line trains will leave the Largo and Franconia-Springfield terminals every 20 minutes. Yellow Line trains will also run every 20 minutes between the Huntington and Mount Vernon Square stations. There will be no Yellow Line service between Mount Vernon Square and Fort Totten.

Metro also expects some minor delays on the Green Line between College Park and Greenbelt, though normal weekend service frequency is expected for the rest of the Green Line.
