Michael Giffin, Bucktown Rape Suspect, Free On Bond

Man Charged In Brutal Rape Free On Bond

A man charged in the brutal rape and strangling of a woman in Chicago's Bucktown neighborhood walked out of Cook County Jail Wednesday after his required $75,000 bond was posted, the Chicago Sun-Times reports.

Michael Giffin, 25, allegedly raped the 26-year-old woman last Saturday after meeting her in a bar, Fox Chicago reports. Giffin allegedly went to the woman's apartment for a drink, and when she attempted to get him to leave, the attack occurred.

She invited him in and they had a beer, but when she said she was tired and wanted to go to sleep, he forced her to have sex with him multiple times, prosecutors said. At one point he allegedly threatened to kill her.

When Giffin went to the bathroom, the woman ran out into the hallway and screamed for help but Giffin grabbed her by the ankles and dragged her back into the apartment, prosecutors allege.

Giffin then choked the victim until she lost consciousness, prosecutors said, according to the Chicago Tribune. Police--responding to a call for help-- took him into custody as he was leaving the apartment.

Cook County Judge Peggy Chiampas set a $750,000 bond for Giffin, a youth soccer coach, the Tribune reports. He left the jail after posting $75,000 Wednesday, and is not due back in court until Feb. 17.
