Chicago police have three people in custody after a 14-year-old boy was fatally shot in a drive-by shooting in the city's Pilsen neighborhood Sunday afternoon.
Identified by family as Michael Orozco, according to ABC Chicago, the teen was leaving a West Side corner store near 23rd Place and Leavitt Street around 4:30 p.m. when he and two teenaged girls with him were attacked.
A light green van passed the group, stopped and backed up, the Chicago Tribune reports. A gunman jumped out and fired at the three teens, then got back in and the van sped away, according to a police report.
After being caught speeding down Cermak Road, three "documented gang members" in the van were quickly taken into custody. A gun was also recovered from the vehicle.
Neighbors told the Tribune the high school freshman loved pizza and basketball, and "never messed with nobody." According to DNAinfo Chicago, police said the incident has "strong gang overtones," and said everyone involved, including the victim, is a documented gang member.
Kids returned to the block to play shortly after the shooting, with one of Orozco's friends telling DNAinfo the 14-year-old's death was not the first they had experienced. "It's an everyday thing," said one of Orozco's peers.
Two of the bullets struck Orozco in the chest; he later died at Mount Sinai Hospital Sunday evening, making him the city's fifth homicide victim in April.
The Sun-Times reported later Sunday evening around 8:40 p.m., Chicago logged its sixth April homicide when a 27-year-old man was stabbed to death in a domestic incident in the Grand Boulevard neighborhood. Eleven more people were also wounded in stabbings and shootings around the city over the weekend.
